Mission Concepcion, San Antonio Missions National Historical Park

Founded by various Spanish Catholic orders to spread Christianity across the southwest in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, the nearly 819-acre San Antonio Missions National Historical Park in south-central Texas is made up of four frontier communities.

The oldest is Mission Espada, established in 1690 near present-day Augusta, but relocated to San Antonio in 1731 where Franciscan friars that same year built the Espada Aqueduct to supply irrigation water to nearby farms. Both Mission Concepción and Mission San Juan were established in 1716 in East Texas and moved to San Antonio in 1731. Mission San Jose was established in 1720 and its church was built in 1768.

Each mission’s toolmaking, carpentry, looming, spinning, and masonry helped make it self-sustaining.

2019 American Memorial Park Quarter to be released at park's Amphitheater

The new American Memorial Park quarter, 47th issue of the series and the second design for 2019, is soon to be in circulation. On April 30, 2019, the official launch ceremony for the new quarter design will take place in the American Memorial Park Amphitheater, which is located in Garapan, Saipan.

After the ceremony, a coin exchange will be held where attendees are able to get $10 rolls of the new quarters at face value. This issue depicts an indigenous woman looking out at the Flag Circle and Court of Honor. Add the new American Memorial Park quarters to your collection now.

War in the Pacific National Historical Park Quarter design finalized

On August 14, 2018, the U.S. Mint announced the final design for the War in the Pacific National Historical Park quarters. The reverse shows American forces landing at Asan Bay. These troops strengthened the number available to fight for the liberation of Guam. The inscriptions on the coin’s reverse include the name and location of the site: war in the pacific, guam, the year of issue: 2019, and the motto: e pluribus unum.

This handsome quarter is a perfect match for the 2009 D.C. and U.S. Territories quarter, which also featured Guam, the park’s location. As the 48th in the series overall, the War in the Pacific National Historical Park quarter will be followed by a design honoring San Antonio Missions National Historical Park in Texas.

Candidate designs for new 2019 War in the Pacific National Historical Park Quarter

In September of 2017, both the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) and the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) made recommendations after reviewing several candidate designs for the reverse of the 2019 War in the Pacific National Historical Park quarter.

The CCAC chose a design showing American forces landing at Asan Bay. These troops strengthened the number available to fight for the liberation of Guam. The CFA selected an image that shows a Marine planting the U.S. flag in the foreground, with the island’s Memorial Day Flag display in the background.

Guam served as a strategic military point throughout World War II, and was reclaimed by American forces from the Japanese in 1944. Today, seven sites around the island stand together as a beautiful way to honor those who served during the Battle of Guam.

War in the Pacific National Historical Park featured 48th in National Park Quarter series

War in the Pacific

Just days after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Japanese forces seized the U.S.-held Pacific island of Guam. It remained a strategic military point throughout World War II, until American forces reclaimed the island in 1944.

Today, a total of seven sites around the island make up this National Historical Park. These areas stand together as a beautiful way to honor all those who served during the Battle of Guam. Those who visit the park are able to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities such as snorkeling, fishing and hiking.
