Ten different candidate designs for the 2015 Saratoga National Historical Park quarter were submitted for consideration by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC), the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA), the secretary of the Interior, and the governor of New York where the park is located.

The CCAC has endorsed design SNHP-03 featuring a close-up depiction of British General John Burgoyne surrendering his sword to American General Horatio Gates at the conclusion of the Battle of Saratoga. However, the CCAC recommended that the inscription “Surrender 1777” be changed to “British Surrender 1777”. The CFA has endorsed the same design and agreed with the CCAC’s recommended change for the inscription.

After receiving all reviews and comments, and considering other relevant factors, the Director of the United States Mint will recommend a design to the Secretary of the Treasury who has the authority to make the final decision.

The Battle of Saratoga is considered the turning point of the American Revolution – renewing the patriots’ hopes for independence and convincing the French to ally with the Americans against the British.
