Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Quarter Design Finalized
In September 2016, the U.S. Mint revealed the final design for the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore quarter. As the second release for 2018, this interesting quarter features a kayaker near the sea caves at Devils Island with a lighthouse in the background. Devils Island is one of the 21 Apostle Islands on western Lake Superior.
Hop on a boat at Bayfield, WI and take a 3-hour cruise that takes you past many of the Apostle Islands and lighthouses found in this national lakeshore park. Bayfield is the gateway to the Apostle Islands and smallest incorporated city in Wisconsin, with a population of about 500.

Candidate designs for the 2018 Apostle Islands National Lakeshore quarter[/caption]Candidate designs for the 2018 Apostle Islands National Lakeshore quarter[/caption]In June 2016, the Commission of Fine Arts and Citizens Advisory Committee met to review nine designs for the reverse of the 2018 Apostle Islands National Lakeshore quarter. All designs varied: Six showed kayakers on Lake Superior enjoying the natural rock formations and sea caves. A few of those designs featured a lighthouse in the background. The three other proposed designs highlighted the park’s natural beauty, focusing only on the water, rock formations and sea caves.
After the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA), and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) reviews designs, the U.S. Mint recommends the favorites to the Secretary of the Treasury who then makes the final selection.
The Apostle Islands coin will honor this beautiful park that’s home to 21 islands, many sea caves and wonderful rock formations, plus the largest number of lighthouses found in any national park.

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore
Located in western Lake Superior, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore offers 21 different islands and a 12-mile stretch of lakeshore on the mainland for visitors to enjoy. This Wisconsin park has more lighthouses than any other national park – a total of 8.
Lake Superior is one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world, and because of its rocky shores, the park’s lighthouses once played an important part in maritime navigation. The earliest Apostle Islands “light” was built on Michigan Island in 1856, followed by Long Island’s LaPointe light in 1858 and later Raspberry Island light in 1862. Michigan and Raspberry lighthouses are just a few that visitors can see and tour inside.
In the fall of 1970, 20 islands, a 12-mile strip of mainland and a ¼ mile of water offshore from each land unit became the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore park. Later in 1986, the Congress added Long Island and transferred lighthouses from the Coast Guard to the park.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Quarter Released
The new Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore quarter, 41st issue of the series and the first design for 2018, is now in circulation. On February 7, 2018, the official launch ceremony for the new Pictured Rocks quarter took place in the Mather Elementary School Auditorium, which is located in Munising, Michigan.
After the ceremony, a coin exchange was held where attendees were able to get $10 rolls of the new quarters at face value. This issue depicts Chapel Rock with the white pine that grows out of its top.

On August 1, 2017, the U.S. Mint announced the final design for the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore quarters. The reverse shows Chapel Rock with the white pine that grows out of its top. The inscriptions on the coin’s reverse include the name and location of the site: pictured rocks, michigan, the year of issue: 2018, and the motto: e pluribus unum.

This handsome quarter is a perfect match for the 2004 Statehood quarter, which also featured Michigan, the park’s home state. As the 41st in the series overall, the Pictured Rocks quarter will be followed by designs honoring Apostle Islands, Voyageurs, Cumberland Island and Block Island sites.
