Voyageurs National Park Quarter Design Finalized

In August 2017, the U.S. Mint revealed the final design for the Voyageurs National Park quarter. As the third release for 2018, this interesting quarter features a common loon with rock cliffs and forests in the background. Voyageurs National Park, located on the US-Canadian border, is Minnesota’s only national park.

The loon is just one of the many waterfowl and wildlife found on the lakes that are part of the over 218,000 acres of this Minnesota National Park. International Falls is one of the gateway communities that is located near the park.

International Falls, located on the Rainy River, is about 11 miles from the park’s visitor’s center and directly across from Fort Francis, Ontario, Canada. The town is nicknamed the “Icebox of America” for its cold temperatures and is home to Smokey the Bear Park, where a 26-foot tall statue of this famous bear is located.

In June 2016, the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) and Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) met to review five designs for the reverse of the 2018 Voyageurs National Park quarter. All designs varied: The first showed a campfire near the lake with a small island in the background. The second showed an eagle clutching a fish, soaring above a network of lakes. The third showed an aerial view of the park and lakes. Park officials liked the fourth design showing a few islands with fir trees, and the fifth displayed a common loon with a rock cliff in the background.

After the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA), and the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) reviews designs, the U.S. Mint recommends the favorites to the Secretary of the Treasury, who then makes the final selection.

The Voyageurs coin will honor this beautiful park that’s home to some of the best walleye fishing in the nation, many birds, eastern timber wolves and many small lakes and four large ones.
