Voyageurs National Park, located on the US-Canadian border, is Minnesota’s only national park. In 1965, Voyageurs National Park Association was formed and the group worked to protect the lands around Rainy, Kabetogama, Kamakan and Sand Point Lakes area. Finally in 1975, the national park was established.
The park has 218,054 acres and over a third of that is water, including all or part of the four lakes mentioned above. Besides the four large lakes, there are 26 smaller ones and hundreds of islands. This watery wonderland offers outdoor enthusiasts opportunities to see wildlife, fish, camp and explore the waterways. The park is named for the “voyageurs,” who once paddled its waterways to trade furs.
