The new 2015 Saratoga National Historical Park quarter was released in a special ceremony on November 17 at Schuylerville High School in Schuylerville, NY. The Saratoga quarter is the 30th issue of the 2010-2021 National Park Quarter Series, which is honoring a national park or historic site in all 50 states, D.C. and the 5 U.S. territories in the order that the parks were established.
The reverse design of the 2015 Saratoga quarter bears a close-up depiction of British General John Burgoyne surrendering his sword to American General Horatio Gates at the conclusion of the 1777 Battle of Saratoga (New York) – which was the first major victory for American forces during the Revolutionary War. The obverse features a smaller restored version of the original George Washington portrait introduced on U.S. quarters in 1932.
